While you wait
For a leak, turn off the power to your hot water cylinder at the switchboard. For a major leak, turn the water off at your street meter.
If steam comes from your taps, keep the tap running with children well away, and turn the cylinder off.
If you smell gas, leave the building before you call.
Going away?
Turn off both your hot water cylinder and your water main. A burst pipe while you’re away can leave a very wet mess waiting when you open the door.
